Stop. Breathe. Kick back a few.

Monday, September 24th, 2007

It’s been nearly 2 weeks since I decided to move to Boulder, CO and accept an internship with Crispin Porter + Bugosky. Since then, I’ve finished my internship at Armchair Media, I’ve sold off most of my possesions, and left ATL behind.

I hit the road around noon on Friday, and spent a day at my mom’s house in Texas. I left Sunday at 9 in the morning, and reached Denver at about 10 at night. I’ve spent most of the day today trying to find a place to live.

I’m a bit tired, but this really feels like the first chance I’ve had to stop in a while. And honestly, I’m starting to wonder what I’ve gotten myself into. I’m sure it will be better in the morning. Tomorrow. 10am. For now, I’ll take it easy, and I’ll be posting some photos on flickr. Cool stuff from some of the most beautiful places in this country, and also Kansas. I’ll hopefully be settled in by wednesday, but for now, it’s time to rest up.

I’ve made it to Boulder in one piece, now I just have to find a place to live. Any ideas?

Rocky Mountain High

It’s been a little hectic this quarter, my 8th quarter at Portfolio Center. I’ve been buried deep in work, and hadn’t had much excitement or room to breathe.

About two weeks ago, P.C. was asking to submit mini-books. I already had one put together from back in the day (about 5 months ago) when Mason asked me to put one together. The book came in handy when I had two offers in one week, taking the internship with the brilliant people at Armchair Media.

I sent in the book, and about a week later, I got a call from Crispin Porter + Bugolsky. They want me to spend 3 months in Boulder, Colorado for an internship. They were impressed with my interactive work. I guess Big Smelly Robot won them over, though that project is far from done. They also said that Hank said some good things about me. Who would have thought?

The catch: Not only will I be staying around P.C. an extra quarter (in spirit), I have to start in about a week and a half. My last day at Armchair is Thursday, and I’m leaving for Colorado Friday morning, with a brief stop in Texas. (It adds about 5 hours on to my time on the road, but I have to see the person that made this all possible.)

So, over the next few weeks, I will be chronicling my strange journey across three time-zones and tons of cows on the side of the road.

Saltworks Gallery

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

Saltworks Gallery launched a new website today. The aim was to create a visual identity system that would give the gallery more of a voice in the international art scene. The site itself is a work in process, but it’s a step in the right direction.

What happens when you start seeing design in your sleep?

Building a Manifesto

Every problem requires a unique solution.

Design is about solving problems, it’s not about troubleshooting. Once we depend on rules, we stop progressing as a society. Rules are created to fit the needs of a time. Times change. Rules change. Don’t ask if the solution is good, ask if the solution is right.

My ability to communicate has sometimes been described as, eh…

Back when I was a promising young writer for the Sherman Hi-Talk newspaper (which I just now realised what the name meant), the typical practice was get an assigment, wait until about 4 hours from deadline, and then pull together some words and stuff. I always heard things like “Good job” and “Great story,” and even “It made me cry.” I was never really into writing, and was in fact a photographer who wrote one story per edition. I never believed my writing to be very good. I thought it more B.S., which I had figured out was what people wanted on my exit test.

I then ambled around Film, English, News Writing, and finally majoring in Advertising in undergrad. I came to Portfolio Center and became a designer. I’m apparently good enough to be employed and sought out by individuals that need help. I’ve been able to create things that I am very proud of, that communicate good ideas, and some great notions.

But now I have the toughest project ever. I have to come up with a brand for myself. What am I about? What makes me special? Tough questions, I know.

Well, here’s something for starters. akem.ws
